Colour Blind

Hello lovelies!

It's the weekend! Hurrah hurrah!

I reckon that means it's about time I shared my second craft project from last weekend, don't you?

When we moved into our house the majority of rooms were decorated in cream wallpaper; pretty much as inoffensive and neutral as you can get. The kitchen, however, was a vision in orange. Orangey pine cabinets, mustardy coloured wallpaper, a delightful floral border thing stuck over the top of the wallpaper, orange flowers on the tiles, and this hideous roller blind:

The alphabet badges pinned on the left hand side were from last year's Paperchase haul; I decided to use them to label a few things around the house as a tongue-in-cheek version of those shabby-chic signs which say "Home" or "Bathe" or "Eat". If you need a sign to remember where you are or what you should be doing, you probably shouldn't be allowed near water or knives without supervision.

I searched online for a while to try and find a replacement that was a bit more interesting (read: less revolting), but couldn't make up my mind. So I decided there was only one option; if I couldn't find what I wanted, I might as well make one myself.

I bought a cheap and cheerful plain white rollerblind from Ikea, and started pinning some inspiration. At first I was planning on covering the whole thing in colourful doodles, like an old skool myspace page. Probably with unicorns. Instead, I found myself drawn to a lot of gorgeous nautical designs; a classic kitchen theme, as I'm sure you'll all agree...

This is what I ended up with:

There's still quite a lot of white space, but I can always take the blind back down and draw on some more. And it still sort-of includes a unicorn; a unicorn of the sea.

What do you think?

  1. You are so motivated and creative! What did you use to do the design? I particularly like the compass though octopi creep me out so trying to ignore the sneaky tentacle. X

    1. I used a combination of fabric pens and chalkboard pens- not the most suitable option perhaps, but they were chunky, in bright colours, and I had them to hand xxx

  2. What a good idea! I almost never like pre-existing curtain designs, especially kitchen-y ones. I bet if the material could handle marker/pen, it could handle chalkboard spray paint. A roll down chalk surface would be really cool in the kitchen! *stealing this idea asap*

  3. A WHALICORN. OMG.
What a cool idea. I don't think my landlord would be too pleased if I painted our blinds howeveras they are his really...

I too have no love whatsoever for those things that say 'bathe''cook' etc. So naff, I have been given a few over the years which have somehow been thrown away with the wrapping paper ;) However Sam likes things like that and before A arrived bought a wooden plaque thing for her wall that says something cheesy like 'we loved you before we met you' or something similarly naff. I have managed thus far to keep it off the wall by pretending to vomit every time I see it. It's behind the toilet in our en suite/store room.

Thank you too for the lovely comments recently, I am so far behind on reading blogs that I cannot return the favour, but hopefully this pointlessly long comment will suffice!

    1. You're very welcome :) And your long comment more than suffices!

Bless Sam- well done for standing your ground. I'm very against sentiments that you can buy from a shop whether signs, cards, or posters. I would much, MUCH rather someone told me how they felt in an ineloquent way than gave me something with a pre-printed message. Demanding, aren't I?! :p xxx

    1. Thank you muchly :) Narwhals are definitely in my top 20 animals (she says, having never written a list of her top 20 animals, and subsequently panicking that they might actually NOT make the top 20... :s) xxx

  11. I love it! I only wish I was as crafty as you - I think if I tried doing something like that, it's just end up covered in stick figures (although perhaps I could say I was just channelling Lowry...) :-) xxx
ps. I'm completely with you on the whole signs thing - are people really that dense that they need a sign to remind them!? :-)
